There are all those lists about dorm room essentials but I don’t think you need a lot of the stuff of it. There’s a lot of other stuff I think you do need that they don’t tell you about. What are your own must-haves for your dorm room and college life?

I am living in a dorm room with only a couple channels available to watch- my friends and I are looking to figure out a way to get cable either on a computer and hook it up to a big monitor/tv or just find any way to get cable! Any ideas, suggestions? Thanks!

If you have a new tv just connect your tv to the cable line without paying for cable and you will receive free basic cable. Or try buying a converter box, you’ll be able to access multiple cable channels for free.

I need some advice or good techniques on how to keep a dorm room clean. And i also would like to know how to keep my dorm room smell at the least fresh. I want my room to smell good instead of a dusty kinda of smell.

the Renuzit apple cinnamon adjustable cones are really nice. They are only about $1 and they last a long time and smell great. I use them all over my house. And I can walk into a room and smell the scent.

I live here at home and am a full-time college student. How can I make my room look more like a dorm room? I am getting my A.A. in Elementary Education. Right now I have a TV,dresser, bed, and a book shelve plus a shelve on the wall. Any one have any ideas on a dorm room style for me?

This is cute, most kids in dorms want to make the rooms look like home.
You get a desk, a dresser, a bed, concrete block walls, cold tile floors and really ugly drapes. Oh, and a roommate!
So which part would you like?

If I wanted to play relatively loud music in my dorm room without getting fined or kicked out, I need some way to soundproof it. I also am not allowed to use nails or tacks in the walls so what’s the best way to do this?

You need to buy acoustic art or acoustic panelling. Just google that as i do not know where you live. I am in Australia and there are plenty of places here that sell it.

I’m in a toss-up over this. There’s a shower room, but it’s communal so there’s lots of people in there. I don’t know if I should change in there anyway, or do it in my dorm room with my roommate sitting there. Thanks.

You can pick up a privacy screen pretty cheap at a store. Put it between your beds, and it gives you both an area to change it, and lets you sleep without that feeling that you’re being stared at.

So I think we’re all aware that dorm room furniture (desk, chest of drawers, chair) is extremely ugly. I was wondering if anyone had any non-permanent things I could to make mine a little more appealing. Thanks!

Cover them with something. Then just remove the coverings when you are ready to move away.
Desk: On top of it place one of those very large clear see- thru plastic pads and put pictures, schedules, etc. between the clear plastic and the desk top. Available at Office Max or other office supply store. Then add a lamp, etc.
Chest of drawers: Place a covering of some sort over the top. Get creative. Lay down a poster paper of your choice of colors and cut to size. Available at Meijers, Wal-Mart, office supply, etc. Or use those regular doilys available at the dollar store. A piece of fabric of your choosing, a towel, gift wrap (there are all sorts of designs); but don’t use anything that will stick and damage the furniture.
Chair: Cover it with a regular cover you can buy at more departments stores, Wal-Mart, K–Mart, Meijers, etc. Or use a blanket or coverlet, quilt, or beach towels. Use the large baby diaper pins to secure them.
Decide what colors you like. Pick one main color, one secondary color, and one accent color. Look for these colors in whatever coverings you use. Check out a Color Chart Wheel to help select colors, on-line.

I stay in a single dorm room in college, and each room has a smoke alarm and a sprinkler. I would like to light a scented candle (in a glass jar) to spice up the room abit, will it trigger the smoke alarm/sprinkler? It would suck if it does and the ensuing sprinklers soak my electronics.
The two ideal places I could place the candle happen to be below the smoke alarm and sprinkler. I can endeavor to move it elsewhere though if that is too dangerous.
Please advise, thank you!

A candle will not trigger the system. Just make certain that the candle isn’t too large and blow it out whenever you aren’t in your dorm room.
My daughter has a smelly candle in her dorm room and so far, so good!
